December Home Maintenance
As the weather turns cold, home maintenance focuses on things you can do indoors to make sure your home is prepared and kept in good working order.
One of the first things you should do is check to make sure you are stocked up on supplies in case of a power failure. Candles, flashlights, and non-perishable food are all good things to have. Something a lot of homes don't have is a non-electric heater. The
Mr. Heater Portable Buddy Heater is a great heater to have in case of emergencies. It runs on the small 1lb propane tanks that are used for camping.
Another good idea is to check all your light switches and outlet covers to make sure they are functioning properly. Have that outlet that hasn't worked in years? December is a good time to replace it.
Diynetwork.com has a great guide on how to replace them here. After you are sure you have everything in working order, SnazzySwitch.com has some great covers that will help put some spice into every room.
Make sure you have plenty of salt or
ice melter. Sand always comes in handy for getting traction for stuck vehicles.
Something that you should do every month is replace that furnace filter. We know, you've let it lapse for a few months. It's easy to ignore. But, the winter months you really want that furnace functioning as well as possible. Take five minutes and install a new one.
